Erasmus+

Higher Education System

ERASMUS+

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The 2021-2027 Erasmus+ programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life. It has an estimated budget of €26.2 billion, which is nearly double the funding compared to its predecessor programme (Erasmus+ 2014-2020).

Who can benefit from Erasmus?

Erasmus+ offers mobility and cooperation opportunities in the fields of higher education, vocational education and training, school education (including early childhood education and care), adult education, youth, and sport.

Higher education students (short cycle/Bachelor/Master/Doctoral) and staff (academic and non-academic) can benefit from an international mobility experience through Erasmus+.

What does it offer?

Students registered in a higher education institution and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree or another recognised tertiary level qualification are eligible to participate in a study or traineeship mobility. Recent graduates are also eligible to take part in a traineeship mobility within 12 months of graduating.

While a study mobility must involve 2 higher education institutions from different countries (one as sending institution and the second as host institution), for traineeship mobility, the host organisation may be in an enterprise, a research institute, a laboratory, an organisation or any other relevant workplace.

An Erasmus+ student mobility may take place, in certain specific conditions, in one of the:

  • 27 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden);
  • third countries associated to the Programme (Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey);
  • third countries not associated to the Programme (all other countries).

An Erasmus+ mobility for students may have various durations for the time spent physically in the host country:

  • 5 to 30 days (short-term Erasmus+ mobility);
  • 2/3 months to 12 months (long-term Erasmus+ mobility).

In both cases, the physical duration may be combined with a virtual component facilitating a collaborative online learning exchange and teamwork (blended mobility). Per each study cycle, the same student may participate in mobility periods totalling up to 12 months of physical mobility, independently of the number and type of mobility activities that are undertaken.

Other benefits of an Erasmus+ student mobility include:

  • Monthly grant to co-finance the living and transportation costs in a foreign country, depending on the host country, including additional financial support for students with fewer opportunities and special needs, as well as students choosing to travel internationally with green means of transport;
  • Exemption from tuition fees, registration, examinations, access to laboratory and library facilities at the host university during the mobility period;
  • Full automatic academic recognition from the sending institution for the activities satisfactorily completed during the mobility period, in accordance with the learning agreement, as well as having the recognised components included in the Diploma Supplement.
