German Language and Literature - Hungarian Language and Literature
The Department of German Language and Literature can proudly look back on a long history, as the activity of German studies in Cluj began with the founding of the Franz Joseph University in 1872. The then 26-year-old young scientist Hugo von Meltzl received his appointment as Professor and remained the holder of the chair until his early death (1908). The discipline survived the difficult war years and its temporary abolition by the socialist government in 1948.
Today, the department for German studies in Cluj-Napoca is internationally recognized, where courses are taught exclusively in German. Many different projects are carried out with students and scientific conferences are organized annually. The department also has its own publication series. Students are offered a number of scholarship opportunities. In addition, the work of the nine local lecturers is supported by guest lecturers from the DAAD and the OeAD.
The specialization can be combined with Hungarian as a segment B language. The Department of Hungarian Literary Studies and the Department of Hungarian and General Linguistics offer courses in common disciplines such as history of Hungarian literature, literary theory, comparative literature, aesthetics, literary sociology, general linguistics, normative linguistics, phonetics, morphology, lexicology, syntax, text linguistics, semantics, semiotics or dialectology.
