The specialization took shape from the establishment of the Polytechnic School in Timisoara (1920) and operated, under different designations, being an elite section of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The program is based on 14 laboratories (eg: the Engine Laboratory, the Turbine Laboratory, the Boiler, Combustion Installations and Heat Exchangers Laboratory, the Multifunctional Laboratory of Thermal Machines and Renewable Energies), with friendly and interactive means of modern teaching, calculation and measurements. Students are trained as mechanical engineers, managers or businessmen. Energy is known to be the driving factor of any society. In the first years, courses common to the field are followed within the program. In the first years, classical courses and computer use are taught along with the use of different specialized software products: CATIA, ProEngineer, ANSYS, MATLAB, MATHCAD.
