Program description

Norwegian Language and Literature - English Language and Literature

The Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literatures of the UBB is the only academic institution in Romania offering a Bachelor program in Norwegian language and literature, accredited at national level - both as major (A) and minor (B). The BA provides courses of Norwegian phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicology, language variation, literature, translation, culture and civilization, didactics as well as one optional/selected course of Swedish. The Norwegian language and literature BA program has continuously functioned since 1991 when it was created at the Faculty of Letters. In 2001, the Department of Scandinavian languages and literatures was created having at its core the Norwegian study program. The Nordic Studies Library opened in 1997 represents an important study environment for students and staff. The internationalization of the program comprises exchange mobility programs for students and staff at Norwegian and European academic institutions, summer courses, Norwegian visiting professors, meetings with Norwegian writers.

The specialization can be combined with English as a segment B language. The mandatory courses follow the historical evolution of English and American literature (the Medieval and Renaissance English literature, the literature of the Enlightenment, the poetry of the 18th century and Romanticism, the literature of the Victorian Era, the English literature of the 20th century, contemporary English literature, American literature) and developing students’ knowledge of traditional linguistics (phonetics, lexicology, morphology, syntax, language history) and theoretical linguistics (formal semantics, generative grammar).
