Polymer Science and Engineering (PSE) is one of the most important programs in Chemical Engineering, encompassing both fundamental studies and emerging trends focused on natural and synthetic polymer tracks. As expected in a continuously evolving field, the curriculum focuses on innovations and research applications across science, technology, and engineering. The PSE program aims to offer students a broad range of technical competencies, from applying methods, concepts, and theories to analyze macromolecular compounds of natural and synthetic origin, to designing and monitoring processes and installations for polymer processing and the synthesis of thermoplastic or thermoreactive polymers. Additionally, through elective courses, the curriculum covers advanced technologies for processing vegetal macromatrices and isolating the major constituents of biomass to obtain cellulose-based fibrous structures and sustainable materials. Polymer engineers can work in diverse areas, including: development of new polymers and biopolymers, the vegetal biomass refining industry, equipment design for the synthesis, processing, and chemical modification of natural and synthetic polymers, project engineering and environmental process management, the paints and organic coatings, cosmetics, food, and automotive industries and research institutes, as well as chemical, biochemical, or quality control laboratories. Setting up and managing a laboratory, evaluating renewable products, coordinating environmental impact studies, designing new green materials, and optimizing delignification or biomass valorization processes are all common facets of a polymer engineer's role in this future-oriented field.
