The programme offers various lectures and seminars that create the needed framework for a qualitative leap from simple descriptions and empiric data to the systematic study of language within a well-defined theoretical framework. The MA starts from the main idea that the study of the language faculty opens a window into the human mind. Linguistics is more than the compilation of descriptive grammars and dictionaries or knowledge of an increasingly larger number of languages. Through the teaching methods, the students’ involvement in formulating hypotheses, their critical testing and assessment, the programme provides them with the conceptual apparatus and methods needed for understanding and analysing any linguistic system.
